Brian Tracy Success: The Law of Forced Efficiency
This comes from Brian Tracy’s “21 Great Ways To Double Your Productivity - Number 8″ Podcast.
The Law of Forced Efficiency states that “There’s never enough time to do everything, but there’s always enough time to do the most important things.”
Following this law will give you the ability to put your head down until the job is done by the deadline. In fact, if you follow this law regularly, you will complete your tasks in advance of the deadlines.
A lot of people say that they work best under pressure. No one works best under pressure. This is a just an excuse for poor time management.
When you work under pressure, you make more mistakes. This often requires that the job be redone at a later time.
Brian Tracy suggests Four Great Questions to increase efficiency and double productivity:
1. Before you start work, ask yourself, “What is the highest value use of my time?”
What is that you do that contributes the greatest amount of value and worth to your life? What is it that you do that pays the very most or yields the highest rewards to you and your company?
Definitely ask for input from your boss and those working around you. If you’re not absolutely clear about the answer to this question, you won’t be working on the right things. Work on the answer to this question all of the time.
2. Why am I on the payroll? What have I been hired to do? What are the few accomplishments that most determine my success?
These are the activities you need to focus on all day long.
3. What can you, and only you, do, if done well, will make a real difference?
At any one time, there is only one answer to this question. If you don’t do it, it doesn’t get done. But if you do do it, and you do it well, it can make a major difference.
Work on this above all else. This is where you make the biggest contribution.
4. What is the most valuable use of my time, right now?
This is really the best time management question of all.
When you answer this question, you’ll know how you should be spending most of your time: doing the most valuable take at the moment.
Answering these questions will keep you always on the right track. Discipline yourself to work only on the answers to these questions. If you do this, you will double your productivity.
